THE "SCOOP" ON H.O.M.E.
H.O.M.E., which was started in 1996, stands for Helping Our Members Educate. We have around 110 member families. We are a predominantly Christian group and only allow like-minded Christians to be involved at a leadership level (serve on the board, lead a field trip, girls or boys groups, etc. We require volunteers to submit an application and embrace and sign a Statement of Faith). Our Statement of Faith and Policy letter explain our beliefs and our basic operation standards. We welcome any homeschooling family into our group as a member regardless of beliefs or whether all or one child is taught in the home. (We do require that at least one child is being homeschooled per the Colorado Homeschool Law for membership in H.O.M.E. The law can be seen at the CHEC Website at www.chec.org. (CHEC = Christian Home Educators of CO) At their website, click on "Law" on the left side and then click on “Home Schooling Law Full Text.” At the bottom of this are two additional alternatives for homeschooling. Unfortunately this excludes any family who uses solely any government-funded program where the family is not required to file an annual Notice of Intent letter. We follow HSLDA in their philosophy, which states, “Children enrolled in a virtual charter school, public online school, or public school independent study program are not eligible for membership. Enrollment in these secular programs is enrollment in public school, which gives the public school authority over the student to impose state assessment, approval of curriculum, and supervision by a certified teacher.” HOME membership extends only to families whose education is primarily administered and controlled by the parents privately.
We have H.O.M.E. Parent Meetings the last Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. (August - May -- exceptions are: no December meeting; 3rd or 4th Monday in May due to Memorial Day). We do not offer childcare at these meetings, which are for parents only. (Nursing infants under one year are welcome.) Please contact me if you'd like location and directions.
Prior to each meeting there is a Meet-‘N-Greet time from 6:30 – 7:00 p.m. At the end of each parents meeting we have a member of our leadership team available to answer questions for those who are new to homeschooling or those new to Colorado.
Our meetings may feature a topic with a special speaker, one of our own moms and/or dads, or a panel that may include our members. We have hosted speakers such as Keith Dorscht regarding relationships, Treon Goossen regarding Colorado home school laws, Bridgette Mosley regarding the brain and learning issues, and Julie Hiramine of Generations of Virtue. Refreshments are served at the meetings. During our parents meetings we allow time for both fellowship and prayer in small groups.
H.O.M.E. membership requires a yearly application with Policies signed by a parent (by both parents if divorced with joint custody of children) and a $15 yearly fee per family. We do not prorate the fee at any time. However, our parent meetings and many of our activities are open to non-members (some activities require at least one parent to sign a liability waiver). Those who join in the summer will continue their membership into the new school year. Field trips are open to non-members as long as space is available. Currently, the only "Member Only" event is the HartS Fair. Guests may receive a complimentary newsletter at a Parent Meeting, by mail or at an event. Members automatically receive the monthly newsletter via email. Each member family has a folder with their name on it with their nametags inside and any other documents that we may need to pass on to you. It is the responsibility of members to retrieve all papers from the files including their membership cards and to leave nametags in their folder following the meeting.
H.O.M.E. ACTIVITIES: Contact information for these activities is detailed in the monthly newsletter.
